Welcome to the First Edition of Southern Riverina Gliding Club Inc. E News January 12, 2010.

I hope that you all enjoy reading and look forward to recieving any further ideas or contributions from all of our members.  Should you wish to contribute anything of interest please send me an email.

During the last week we have all endured some really hot weather and of course with that comes some great thermals which is what is needed for us to take to the skies and soar around like eagles.  We had a great week and weekend with many visiting members launching there gliders into the skies and having a great time.  All in all there was a total of four gliders in the air for the better part of the week and a fantastic time was had by all culminating in a BBQ dinner held at Mike Toth's hanger on Saturday evening with around twenty members and friends in attendance.

VISITORS:

  • Werner Meuser from Germany who flew in Ingo's glider XX and had some great flights including 2 flights of over 5 hours duration.  Over a total of 6 flights  Werner flew a total of 3,800 km.
  • Wolfgang (Wally) Beyer and his friend Taina also from Germany stayed with thier friend Dieter Albrecht and also spent 2 days flying in the Club gliders IUH and GES recording good times, good distances and high altitudes.
  • Ken Ueyama from Japan was also here and visited with us enjoying some gliding and the BBQ dinner on Saturday evening.
  • Douglas the grandson of Bill and Judy Harvie also had a great time helping out Bill, our 'trusty tow pilot' for the weekend on the airfield and chomping on some BBQ fare in the evening.

MEMBER FLIGHTS:

  • Ross Oehms was also in Tocumwal during the last week and flew club glider GES to The Rock and back completing his 300km task however due to a logger problem he did not achieve the task he had set out to do.  This did not stop him however from having a great big smile on the dial for the remainder of the weekend.  Another claim to fame for Ross was the first outlanding ever by him and a really good one at that landing at Finley Aerodrome.  This is also the first outlanding for the Southern Rivering Gliding Club ever, so thumbs up and well done Ross.
  • Donald Ashton flew his glider GXP on both Saturday and Sunday enjoying flights of 2 hours 30 minutes on Saturday and 45 minutes on Sunday.
  • Ingo Renner flew the Kookaburra on Sunday and flew to Urana, Jerilderie and back to Tocumwal making it the longest flight ever that he has made in the kookaburra of 4 hours and 50 minutes,  a total of 235 km and reaching height of 12,500 feet.  A fantastic effort, he was very happy about it on return.  Ingo again flew the Kookaburra together with Dieter on Monday to Deniliquin and back to Tocumwal reaching height of 13,500 feet.
  • Bernie Sizer flew in glider GXP on Monday achieving his GOLD C reaching the height of 13,500 feet whilst flying to the Rock and back.  Excellent job Bernie, and congratulations on your acheivement.

SATURDAY EVENING BBQ:

A fantastic and yummy spread was served and we welcomed new friends Eve and Kevin Saunders from Cobram.  A delicious spread of salads prepared by members and their wives was served together with tasty wine trifle to complete the meal and many thanks to our cook for the evening with trusty tongs and spatula in hand, Kevin who did a great job with the BBQ.  After that great effort we will sure look forward to you joining us again to tempt us with your culinary skills.  All who attended enjoyed a night of feasting, flying talk and swapping of recipes by the ladies.  As a result of this we plan to hold many more BBQ evenings together with our friends.
